2023 Movie Preview Part I: Long live the Sequels!

My title says it all. I was looking at my list of movies for the first six months and you guessed it...mostly sequels. I did find a few standalone movies but get ready for yet another year jam-packed with sequels because it seems that is the cool thing to do right now. That could be good or bad? 2022 brought us some good movies but here are my picks for movies you should see from January-June of 2023.

The Whale

This move technically came out at the end of 2022 but it has expanded into a wide release as we start 2023. I'm all about the Brendan Fraser comeback and according to the reviews, he delivers a performance for the ages. You can pencil this one in to receive several Oscar nominations and my money is on BF to bring home the Best Actor award. Welcome back BF! (Now Playing in Theaters)

Knock at the Cabin

The next film from M. Night Shyamalan. I always go into his movies wondering if I can guess the twist that his films always have. I will say this movie looks promising. The trailer does a good enough job of getting you intrigued without giving away too much. One of my major issues with some trailers is them giving away the entire movie in two and a half minutes. Can you guess the twist? (Release Date: February 3)

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

The first MCU movie of 2023 and the first one of Phase Five. Many argued Phase Four was a letdown but come on. Not every Marvel film is going to be as epic as Infinity War or Endgame. Paul Rudd was a prefect choice to play Ant-Man and has made this character more important. I liked Ant-Man and Ant-Man 2 was ok but this one looks good. Since it is the "Multiverse Saga" who knows who we will run into. (Release Date: February 17)

Scream 6

You know the horror fan in me was going to pick this one. This franchise got a shot of life with last year's Scream 5 and was my second favorite behind the OG. I love the idea of taking this one to Jose's neck of the woods (New York City). I do have some bold theories on what is going to happen and it could be a game changer. No Sidney Prescott? No Problem. 2022 many argue was the year of Jenna Ortega and she could be the one to help carry this franchise forward. (Release Date: March 10)

John Wick: Chapter 4

A franchise that I was behind getting into but what a fun franchise this is. I saw a quote that said they don't need a trailer, just a release date and people will go see it. I believe that. Keanu Reeves is on the coolest dudes in Hollywood and is perfect in this role. This franchise doesn't seem to be slacking with the sequels but actually picking up steam. (Release Date: March 24)

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3

The second of three MCU movies to be released this year and I'm very hyped to see this one. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1 is one of my favorite Marvel films and with this supposedly being the last Guardians movie, it should be a good one. Another well done trailer with just enough hype and not giving much away. This is one I will definitely be going to see in the theaters. (Release Date: May 5)

Killers of the Flower Moon

You had me at Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. This will be their sixth film together and you know it is going to be great. They haven't dropped a trailer yet which bothers me but we all know I will still be going to see it. Seems this one might only get a limited release in theaters as it plans to be released to Apple TV. (Release Date: May 2023)

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

As a fan of Indiana Jones franchise, I'm excited. I know the fourth film wasn't great but I have hopes for this one. I did hear rumors that this will be his last time playing Indiana Jones so I hope the final film is a good one. Continues his trend of retiring from his famous characters. (Release Date: June 30)

I know that you are all shocked that Fast X didn't make the cut. I'm going to need a trailer to see how ridiculous that movie is going to be. From this list I have to say The Whale and Guardians 3 are the two I'm most looking forward to seeing while I'm going to list Knock at the Cabin as my sleeper pick to be better than expected. What movies are you most wanting to see as we start 2023? Let me know in the comments! Happy Viewing!
