"The best part was the lack of crowds you would ordinarily encounter during the summer time..."
Most people choose to visit Niagara Falls during the summer. I did the opposite and decided to visit in January during the winter. It was beautiful, empty and damn sure cold. I was born and raised in Florida and it took some getting used to the cold but I loved it. It was the most snow I have ever seen and watching the snowfall over the falls was truly breathtaking.
The fireworks show that takes place over the weekends is something you don’t want to miss. They have lights everywhere so you feel like you are walking through a winter wonderland. There are tons of wineries in the area and we did a winery tour which was a blast and I highly recommend, especially if you a big wine drinker. All of the wine is delicious but they are best known for their Ice Wine (which is produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine).
Niagara on the Lake is a small town and is just a short drive away and gets you away from many of the tourists. It’s a cool town where Lake Ontario meets the mouth of the Niagara River. A truly gorgeous and incredible sight to see. The entire trip was a slam dunk. The best part was the lack of crowds you would ordinarily encounter during the summer time. Visiting during the winder does have a few downsides which include some of the attractions being closed which is a bummer. Still beats the major crowds that you would encounter over the summer months.
Overall I would give the experience an 8.5 out of 10. The main knock would be that the overall food quality was a major disappointment (and you all know that I love food) and some of the attractions were cheesy and touristy. I won’t let that bring me down. Overall, it was fun, scenic and easy trip with a smaller crowd.
